Whether you are a manufacturer or a robotic systems integrator, we have the tooling to help automate your manual process. Let's discuss your project and see how we can help bring quality and consistency to your surface-finishing application. CONTACT US   The First Robotic Force Compliance Device PushCorp was founded in March 1993 with the primary goal of creating end effectors for robotic, surface-finishing processes. Our first product, which was patented in 1995, was the Adjustable Force Device (AFD). This product's function was to allow a robot to maintain a consistent yet adjustable force when in contact with a part's surface. Previously, industrial robots simply moved from point A to point B without any regard for the amount of force being applied. PushCorp’s innovative compliance device opened the door for robotic grinding, sanding, polishing, and other surface-finishing applications that require a precise force. Prior to this invention, these types of processes were considered virtually impossible to automate due to the immense programming that was required to account for inconsistencies between parts and the abrasive wear. Taking a rough metal and giving it a fine, polished finish is one of the most important steps in creating a final product. Implementing an industrial robot and End of Arm Tool (EOAT) in your manufacturing process helps achieve not only consistency in results but efficiency in the polishing, sanding, and grinding processes. The Limitations of Manual Polishing Manual polishing is a very labor-intensive process. In addition, regardless of how experienced your staff may be, there is always the potential for slight inconsistencies in manual finishing. If polishing a tube by hand, for example, a person visually has to inspect the curved surface and try and apply the abrasive media to the part’s substrate in a consistent manner. Since a person is not rigid and their arm is effectively a spring, it is not possible to apply an equal amount of pressure, especially in tight areas or as they rotate around curvature. This results in inconsistent use of the abrasive materials, leading to an inconsistent or uneven surface. In addition, using different staff members to perform finishing processes can limit the consistent finish of products and negatively influence the overall production process with irregular results. Some irregularities produced by hand finishing are extremely subtle and may not impact the look of your finished product. However, the look of the product may not be the only factor... --- ### New Distributor for Germany and Austria - Published: 2022-09-27 - Modified: 2024-10-03 - URL: https://pushcorp.com/new-distributor-for-germany-and-austria/ - Categories: News PushCorp, Inc. and ASIS GmbH Sign Distributor Agreement for German and Austria PushCorp, Inc. , a leading manufacturer of robotic material removal tooling based in Dallas, Texas and ASIS gmbh based in Landshut Germany, today announced an agreement for ASIS to be PushCorp’s exclusive distributor within the German and Austrian markets. Hand sanding requires considerable time and effort while leaving the result prone to human errors, including fatigue and inconsistency. In contrast, automated sanding reduces downtime and gives a perfect finish consistently across all contours. https://www. youtube. com/watch? v=ZpEfKTS0aJY In this article, we will look at how to remove the imperfections in an electric guitar board's texture, making it smooth all-around using robotics sanding. At this point the body has already been roughed into shape; however, rough edges still exist. into shape; however, it is uneven across the sides. For its complex structure and areas that are challenging to reach, we examined the guitar body parts to determine the best abrasives to use. Gather Your Materials and Get Started Sanding! To access all the parts easily for sanding, we gripped the guitar body with a Shunk gripper on a  Kuka KR120 robot. This approach enabled us Much more flexibility in the movements of the guitar while using different abrasives to work on several areas of the body effectively and conveniently. While it has typically been done by hand, manual sanding has proven to be time-consuming, complex, and repetitive. Human error, operator fatigue, and differences in finishing techniques between operators are some of the problems of manual sanding. Even the same professional may struggle to maintain similar levels of sanding quality throughout the course of a shift. This makes sanding an ideal process for automation. Automated sanding improves consistency and quality and allows for better allocation of human resources to more productive tasks. However, even automated sanding and refinishing are not without problems, ranging from manually changing sanding pads during production runs to overall inconsistencies and quality control issues. So, how can you overcome the biggest challenges facing your robotic sanding processes? Meet PushCorp’s Paper Changer and Finishing Equipment PushCorp’s brand new Paper Changer, The RPC100, addresses many of the common problems of automatic sanding. Here are its benefits: Minimize Downtime Due To Manual Media Changes Typical robotic sanding processes rely on human intervention to change worn-out media. This may not seem like a big deal, but this requires that an operator be available to tend to the discs as they wear — this defeats the purpose of the automation and if the operator is not there then the robot continues to use a disc past its useful life – both of these add cost to the system are unneeded consequences of a poorly executed automation solution. This excess material is called flash or flashing and is usually the result of material leakage between the two mating surfaces of the mold. This excess material must be removed before the part can proceed to the next step in the process. The process of removing the excess material is called deflashing. While in the past deflashing was typically done by hand, the process was time-consuming and could result in unsafe working conditions for the employees. Now, with improvements in technology, robotic deflashing is a faster and more efficient process resulting in a vastly improved finished product. Manual Deflashing In the past, manual deflashing involved employees who removed flashing using hand tools. The process was time-consuming and dangerous due to the repetitive nature of the movements required to deflash the products. The potential for injury was high with the employees using sharp tools required to remove the flashing. Employees who also used grinding tools would release dust particles into the air that would then be inhaled, leading to possible breathing problems. The conditions were unsafe with a high potential for workers' compensation injuries and subsequent loss of income for the company. Automated Deflashing Automated deflashing involves the use of a robotic arm to help remove the unwanted flashing. Depending on whether the flashing is plastic or metal different cutting tools are used. For plastics, end mills or... --- ### The Advantages of Automated Deburring - Published: 2021-09-22 - Modified: 2024-12-12 - URL: https://pushcorp.com/the-advantages-of-automated-deburring/ - Categories: automated deburring - Tags: automated deburring, disabling injuries, workplace injuries, white finger syndrome, manual deburring What is Deburring? Deburring plays a critical role in the manufacturing finishing process. Burrs are an undesirable by-product of certain manufacturing practices. These include drilling, punching, and turning. Burrs can obstruct drilled or punched holes, preventing air flow, or the flow of fluids or lubricants. For decades, the standard deburring practice was to grind off the vertical burr or sand the surface. However, deburring terms have come to mean different things to different organizations or industries. As a result, it’s important to clearly outline what needs to take place. For some companies, removing only the vertical burr or dross is the focus. For others, rounding the edges in addition to removing the vertical burr is the goal. Labor Advantages of Automating Deburring Automated deburring offers multiple advantages. Decreased labor costs, increased efficiency, consistency, and providing a safer working environment have led many organizations to transition from manual to automated deburring. Manual deburring can be time-consuming and produce irregularities even with experienced operators. The skill level of these staff can vary greatly due to high turnover in the industry and manually finished parts can be inconsistent. However, with an automated deburring machine, parts can be processed more consistently and efficiently, in addition to requiring less staff. There is another staff benefit resulting from automated deburring. In smaller companies, welders, laser operators, press brake operators, or other highly skilled workers do not have to pull double-duty by deburring and can instead remain focused on the areas of their expertise. Less skilled staff members can... --- ### Challenges in Automating Milling Applications   - Published: 2021-07-12 - Modified: 2024-10-03 - URL: https://pushcorp.com/challenges-in-automating-milling-applications/ - Categories: automated milling, robotics - Tags: robotic milling, milling applications, CNC, robotics Robotic machining has become a viable alternative to using CNC machines in milling applications.  Automating processes can lead to substantial savings, especially in large-scale part manufacturers such as those in aerospace and automotive, and custom manufacturers. There are other benefits besides potential cost savings from automating milling and deburring applications with robotics. Robotic milling can integrate: Advanced machine vision Force perception AI robotic machining Machine learning Autonomous measurement Autonomous execution Although robotics can replace some CNC machines, the main emphasis in robotic milling application is the rapid reconfigurable technology to meet customized process requirements and uncertain processing tasks. Despite the benefits, there are still challenges to automating milling applications. Here are some of the challenges, according to Rob House, Co-CEO of OCTOPUZ, Inc. Programming the Motion In milling applications, a robot is typically deployed to do 5+ axis milling/deburring. Creating the motion can be quite complex and require advanced software packages, and more training. It takes much more time compared to programming a 3-axis laser cutting table, for example. Robot controllers are usually not designed to read and execute points quickly, but most software will not bother optimizing the space between points since CNC machines are designed to read a lot of points. This issue can lead to lag and jitter in the robot's motion if the robot controller isn’t able to read points quickly enough. Managing Robot Errors Robotic milling toolpaths can have complex motions and movements. As House points out, this complexity increases the likelihood of running into potential errors, including: Singularities Joint limits Reach limits Collisions. An advanced software package will allow... --- ### Evaluating a Robotic Polishing Project  - Published: 2021-06-07 - Modified: 2024-10-03 - URL: https://pushcorp.com/evaluating-a-robotic-polishing-project/ - Categories: robotic polishing, robotics, Blog - Tags: robotics, robotic polishing, industrial polishing projects One of the biggest benefits of robotic automation is improved consistency. Robots follow highly repeatable motion paths, which means robotic processing avoids the variability seen in operations performed by hand and from operator to operator. This is particularly important in robotic material finishing projects. With manual polishing part-to-part variation is inevitable: a robotic polishing system can help reduce these variations if the application is evaluated thoroughly beforehand and processed properly. We recently spoke with Mike Olson, owner of Complete Solution Robotics LLC, and Charles Young, Sales Manager - Robotic Systems at Acme Manufacturing Company, to get their views on how to evaluate a robotic polishing application. Here’s what we took away from our discussion with these two robotics automation specialists. Is the Project Well Defined? Young suggests starting out by asking, “What are the current problems driving them to automation? ” Common goals are to minimize repetitive motion injuries, save labor, increase capacity, or raise quality. He recommends producing a Scope of Work document, saying, “You would be surprised how many prospects don’t understand how helpful this is. ”  With this, the end customer and integrator have a set of metrics to which the project can be set.   Within this Scope of Work document, there will be careful attention paid to the exact success criteria that the cell’s design and operation will be measured against. Young also recommends establishing the annual production volume and parts required per hour for each part number or reference. He notes this is the key factor in... --- ### The Challenges of Grinding and Finishing Automation - Published: 2021-04-23 - Modified: 2024-10-03 - URL: https://pushcorp.com/the-challenges-of-grinding-and-finishing-automation/ - Categories: Automated Grinding, Process specification, Blog, Uncategorized - Tags: Automated grinding, Force control, Process specification There are significant benefits to automating grinding and finishing processes. Robotic grinding and material removal applications offer a more versatile and streamlined way to improve operations over manual operations. It also overcomes one of the biggest challenges in non-automated finishing: consistency. Human error, different finishing techniques, operator fatigue, and different operators can all provide inconsistencies that lead to an undesirable surface finish. Robotic grinding and finishing also play a major role in improving safety, filling labor shortages, and reducing the high turnover of employees assigned these tasks. However, automating your grinding and finishing process has its own challenges. Here are some of the biggest ones the integrators we work with encounter and how they overcome them. Measurable Process Specification To automate a material removal processes, it is important to have a clear set of finishing objectives. Most integrators aren’t experts in every finishing process so they have to rely on their end customer for guidance. Unfortunately, it is common for some manufacturers new to robotic grinding and finishing to have no written or measurable specification for their product. Many rely on visual inspection, leaving too much ambiguity for what constitutes an acceptable part. For companies interested in automating their manual process, it is extremely important to define what the acceptable metrics are. It is also crucial to detail the current process by listing the current abrasives and tooling used. From our Passive Compliance series. - Published: 2024-05-15 - Modified: 2025-02-13 - URL: https://pushcorp.com/product/afd62/ - Categories: Force Compliance Devices, Passive Compliance AFD62 End Effector (EOAT) The AFD62 is part of PushCorp’s Passive Compliance series. This end effector can apply up to 27 lbf in any orientation. Unlike the active series, this equipment relies on an external air pressure regulator to set the applied force. This pressure must change when a new orientation is programmed in order to maintain a constant force. For this reason, the AFD62 is most commonly used for robotic, material-removal applications with flat or prismatic parts. High speed spindles can be mounted to the AFD62. Together, they can automate a wide variety of light-duty, robotic processes: Automated Grinding Automated Sanding Automated Polishing Automated Deburring Automated Deflashing If the application requires a heavier spindle, our AFD72 is the third largest in the series. It can apply up to 60 lbf and features a more robust set of linear bearings. The AFD62 Series is available in two configurations: AFD62-1 Vertical and the AFD62-2 Horizontal. The units are functionally identical but differ in the orientation in which they attach to the robot's wrist. This allows you to optimize a robot’s reach and dexterity for your particular application.   --- ### AKD2G - Published: 2023-11-09 - Modified: 2025-04-08 - URL: https://pushcorp.com/product/akd2g/ - Categories: Servo Spindles, Servo Motor Amplifiers AKD2G Servo Amplifier The AKD2G is manufactured by Kollmorgen and is PushCorp's next-generation amplifier. The TWS91 System is composed of five major components: the Track (either Flex or High-Flex), the Drive Carriage, the Weld Shaver, the Control Umbilical, and the Control Console. A Weld Shaver (SWS100-3. 7-XXmm) is moved along the Track by the Drive Carriage. The customer controls everything through the Control Console. The Track is attached to a steel panel via eight rare earth magnets. Both types of track (either Flex or High-Flex) are designed to conform to the curvature of the panel. The 35 in. (0. 9 m) High-Flex Track will conform to a 80 in. (2 m) bend radius. The 70 in. (1. 8 m) Flex Track will conform to a 400 in. (10 m) bend radius, allowing fewer track sections to be utilized. The Drive Carriage travels along the Track and moves the Weld Shaver over the weld seam. It also provides the compliant force to keep the Weld Shaver in contact with the panel. The Drive Carriage is motivated by a gear-reduced servo motor with closed-loop feedback. This allows the user to easily control and monitor the desired feed rate. One of three different configurations of the Weld Shaver (SWS100-3. 7-20mm, SWS100-3. 7-39mm, or SWS100-3. 7-59mm) is installed on the Drive Carriage, dependent on the width of the weld seam to be removed. --- ### SWS100-7.2 Series > SWS100-7.2 Series.
